" The following guidance and recommendations, relating to staff who are exposed to violence at work, has been prepared by a working group under the direction of CFOA Operations Committee and the Practitioners Forum. The working group carefully considered how violence in the workplace should be referred to in this document. Different definitions have been used by various agencies and FRSs who have been consulted and it was agreed to base the guidance on the Health & Safety Executive’s terminology. Therefore for the purpose of this document Tackling Violence at Work is defined as: ‘Any occurrence in which a member of staff is abused, threatened or assaulted by a member of the public in circumstances arising out of or in the course of their employment.’"
