"Minister Wolfgang Schäuble released his department's official statistics concerning crime in 2006 in Berlin on Tuesday. And the news was good: most of the numbers were down compared to the preceding year.
Germany's streets were never particularly dangerous, but according to the Interior Ministry, they are now safer than at any time since statistics have been collected. Reported criminal offenses on the whole dropped by 1.4 percent over 2005: to a total of just over 6.3 million."
