"Countries and territorial waters of Western Africa and the Gulf of Guinea have, during the past four years, emerged as strategic transhipment points and operating bases for South American trafficking groups supplying cocaine to the burgeoning European market.Compared to the traffic brought directly to Spain and the Netherlands from Colombia or neighbouring gateway countries, such as Venezuela, the quantity of cocaine passing through West Africa is currently low. However, European law enforcement officials raise concerns about this area's potential for growth and the region has become an area of recent focus for the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)."
