Almeida, José Carlos Pina
"The author identifies the main characteristics of emigration to the UK from Portugal since its accession to the EC (1986). Huge variations between sources make it difficult to estimate numbers, but it is clear that, in contrast to earlier periods, the UK is now a significant destination. While immigrants remain predominantly unskilled, their movements reflecting the economic cycle in Portugal, this is gradually changing as students and professionals become more mobile. A key finding of this article is that Portuguese passport holders are more varied in their origins than most other national groups, reflecting widespread movements from the former colonies into Portugal, and then onwards into other parts of the EU."
