“For at least a decade, Jim Cabay has watched substance abuse intensify among Alberta's field crews. "At one time, drugs were pretty much confined to labourers and newer apprentices," says the operations manager of Bonnyville Welding Ltd. "Now we have to be careful when we're hiring journeymen and supervisors as well." His own company, supported strongly by its corporate customers, uses screening and termination to keep the problem in check among its 100-120 workers. However, any welder or pipefitter who gets released can soon find work elsewhere in the chronically labour-tight oilpatch.”
