"It's a potential nightmare for both immigrants and politicians in Spain: the prospect of heightened tensions in the country's major towns and cities leading to outbreaks of violence between the native Spanish population and members of the immigrant communities.
The clashes between Spanish and Latin American youths in Alcorcón, a town on the outskirts of the capital Madrid, could indeed be a warning of worse to come, although the authorities have attempted to dismiss what has happened as a one-off incident which has nothing to do with xenophobia."
