"Investigates an innovative project at a prison near York aimed at preventing women offenders from returning to crime. WHAT is the secret to preventing women offenders returning to a life of crime once they leave prison? Building up their self esteem and sense of self worth, says Debi Hawkins. Without that, Debi says, many women simply "go back to the same chaotic lifestyle they had before they went into prison". With it, they have a real chance of finding the courage to say no to "drugs, stealing, or whatever". Debi is the co-ordinator of the Catalyst Project, a £300,000 initiative at Askham Grange Prison, near York, which aims to give women offenders back the confidence they need to cope with the outside world and resist a return to a crime."
