"Biometric technology, in its basic form, has been around a lot longer than most people realise. In the 14th Century, Chinese merchants stamped childrens’ palm prints and footprints on paper with ink to differentiate the young children from one another. ... However, biometric authentication is only half the security battle and this is what many people don’t understand. It may protect the device, but what about the data on that device? Think of your laptop, PC or USB storage device as a house – biometrics may be the alarm, but just having an alarm is useless. You need to lock the doors as well and this is where robust data encryption is imperative."
