"A routine, every day task that correctional institutions have to manage is the flow of mail to and from prisoners. Decisions from the courts, including from the United States Supreme Court, have established some important legal guidelines for the handling of such mail, and lower courts have applied those principles to myriad specific circumstances. The article that follows does not attempt to be exhaustive on this topic, but rather to serve as an introduction to the subject."
