“The world must act quickly to stop powerful drug-trafficking cartels taking over ancient trading routes in West Africa and the Sahel as they seek easier gateways to Europe, the U.N.'s anti-crime chief said. He urged preventive action by the world community, working with local governments. "The international community has a chance to intervene in a sort of pre-emptive strike," he said. As Colombian cocaine cartels increasingly found their direct access routes to U.S. and European markets being blocked by anti-narcotics agencies, they started transiting the drug through West Africa a few years ago.”
