"After having based the country’s economic and political strength on the return of the Jewish people to their native land, the country is being confronted for the first time with a problem which is characteristic of the majority of developed countries; that of hidden immigration. After World War II and the dramas of the Holocaust the State of Israel became the refuge for the 'aliya' (Jewish immigration) but over the last few years the arrival, illegal or otherwise, of people of different nationalities and cultures - in part from the African continent - is modifying the demographic make up of the country, above all making integration improbable."
