"This article asks the question, 'what does diversity do?' by drawing on interviews with diversity practitioners based in higher education in Australia. It shows that diversity as a term is used strategically by practitioners as a solution to what has been called 'equity fatigue'; it is a term that more easily supports existing organisational ideals or even organisational pride. What makes diversity useful also makes it limited: it can become detached from histories of struggle for equality."

"IT IS hard to watch the events now unfolding in the small Louisiana town of Jena without being reminded of the eerie lyrics of Strange Fruit, the song immortalised by Billie Holiday in 1939, which condemned American racism by using graphic imagery to describe the lynching of African Americans in the US's reactionary and backward Deep South: "Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze/Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees." [...] It is too easy to be smug about the superior state of race relations in the UK. No nooses, thank heavens - but segregation and discrimination prevail"

Up to the Mark?: How have Government Departments responded to the new Disability Equality Duty? / Care and Health, July 2007
PDF - http://www.careandhealth.com/resources/pdfs/DRC_Report_Up_to_the_Mark.pdf
"This Report provides an early assessment of the performance of Government Departments on the Disability Equality Duty. All Government Departments must produce and put into effect Disability Equality Schemes. These Schemes set out how each Department measures it performance on disability equality, and how it plans to improve its delivery for disabled people. This Report assesses the Disability Equality Schemes of all fifteen Ministerial Government Departments.
(Full assessments of each of these Schemes are available on the DRC website, alongside any comments which Departments have sent us).

CASE has published two reports commissioned by the Equalities Review, a precursor to the launch in October 2007 of the Commission on Equality and Human Rights. The two papers were prepared to assist in the development of the measurement framework for the Equalities Review, which will in turn form the basis for strategies and priorities among all public bodies to increase the level of social equality."
