"Details of the Prime Minister's promise to give police on the beat hand-held computers to log crimes have been released today.

A total of 27 forces around the country will share £50 million in funding to phase-in the new technology by March 2009 at the latest. Last year the Prime Minister said the Government would push ahead with the scheme, "cutting paperwork so that officers can log crimes on the spot, stay on the beat and not waste time returning to the station to fill out forms".
