"Years ago, armed robbers tended to be just armed robbers. Now they are (also) into drugs, into fraud, they are into murder. Confusion within Victoria Police over who should investigate some of the state's most serious crimes is causing critical delays to murder probes and other investigations, senior police sources say. Sources have told The Age that since a restructuring of the crime department in July, some cases have been stalled by up to a month as they were shuffled between departments. They claim the model has the potential to help criminals "literally get away with murder" as police now spend most of their time on paperwork before investigations begin."
